Wifi Protector: Your shield against Wi-Fi network attacks

There are other smartphone dangers besides viruses and malware. There are also things like WiFiKill and Network Spoofer apps that might spell a lot of trouble. You certainly wouldn’t want to have your sensitive data stolen by attackers.

Since we rely so much on our mobile devices, why don’t we stop for a moment to equip ourselves from potential attacks? We’ve already covered an app that helps you check any potentially harmful permissions that apps request for and another app that helps you achieve tighter browser security. Now, we’ll take a look at an app that will protect your phone from Wi-Fi network attacks.

Developed by Gurke Development, Wifi Protector promises to protect you from Wi-Fi Sniffing attacks and can detect all kinds of Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) related attacks on Wi-Fi networks, such as Denial of Service (DoS) and Man in the Middle (MITM) attacks.

When you launch the app, you won’t be overwhelmed by functions. You’ll simply see a large blue shield against a black background. Wifi Protector has been designed with the newbie in mind, so everything has been configured for you.

If you’re an expert, however, you can change the settings to adapt the app to your needs. Speaking of customization, you can also customize the notifications the app sends you. Wifi Protector also comes with Immunity which prevents WiFiKill from affecting you. This feature, however, is only available on rooted phones. The app’s home screen is very clean and has no ads. If you want to take a look at Wifi Protector’s other functions, tap your mobile device’s Menu button.

The developer claims that Wifi Protector is “100% silent and passive inside the network,” which means that it does not generate any noise nor is it detectable by any potential attackers. Wifi Protector also uses very few resources — none at all if Wi-Fi is disabled. Running a protector like this has to drain your battery dry, right? According to the developer, the app barely drinks your phone’s juice.

If your Wi-Fi comes under attack, the shield will turn red. You can configure the app to play a ringtone and, optionally, to vibrate, to alert you. There are two ways you can go about launching countermeasures. Either tap the red shield or, if you’re lazy, enable Countermeasures to be automatically launched whenever you come under attack. You can also set Wifi Protector to disable your Wi-Fi the moment you come under attack.

To get a better idea on the kind of attacks your phone might be vulnerable to, we highly suggest viewing the video below. The video also illustrates how Wifi Protector can protect your device when you’re under an MITM attack.

You can purchase Wifi Protector for the Google Play Store for US$3.79, a small price to pay for some peace of mind.

What features of the Wifi Protector app do you like best? If your phone isn’t rooted yet, do you think rooting it will be worth it to experience Wifi Protector’s full features?
