Hello 80′s and 90′s kids! Let’s take a trip down to memory lane with an interestingly addictive game called Diskobolos, brought to us by Conquering Bytes. At first glance, you’d think that the game’s going to be like most of those shooting ping-pong type ones that loses its luster faster than you can finish your tea. Diskobolos is anything but that. It seems simple but is fairly challenging. The arena, bionic bugs, and level of difficulty change as you play longer.
Diskobolos is a survival game that would have made Charles Darwin proud. Instead of conquering levels, the aim of the game is to beat The List and make it to the top. Kill as many of those cool looking bionic bugs as you can while you protect your base. Shoot discs to gain more points. Complete missions to increase your ProCamp rating.
You can also increase your chances of staying in the game and gaining more points by selecting an add-on before you start playing. The player with the highest amount of points wins. Hey, it’s not exactly Battle Royale, but I’d love to see my name in the top ten.
I had a hard time playing the game at first. I became too preoccupied by how the green bugs just pop out of the background. The game’s design reminded me of The Matrix, especially with the circuitry wallpaper and smooth robotic animation. It’s a complete eye candy for people like me who love seeing sharp contrasts on their screen.
I particularly love the blue circuit-looking bug because it looked like a possessed chip. The game play is deceptively easy. Shooting and bouncing killer discs around shouldn’t be difficult, right? As you play longer into the game, more bugs come out and they move faster.
At one point, the green bugs reminded of Zerglings rushing towards my base. Ah, memories. Also, if you’re having trouble teaching kids about angles or calculating trajectories, Diskobolos would be a great game to introduce to class. Besides, the best way to learn is to be hands-on. Getting the right trajectory allows you to gain more points and move up The List faster.
Aside from it’s hypnotizing techno beats, retro arena designs, Yoda-speak hints, and that fun Highlander reference when your game’s over, Diskobolos is absolutely free. You’ll just have to ignore the ad banner on the top of the screen. It doesn’t really add to the game’s Matrix-like design, but it’s definitely a small price to pay for an awesome game.
