Mobile World Congress is almost here, and it’s pretty much guaranteed that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be making its debut on Monday. Of course, that’s not all that Samsung will be showing off at the event. Not only is Samsung expect to unveil the next-gen Samsung Galaxy Gear, a new report out of Korea claims the Korean giant is also preparing to announce a new wearable called the Galaxy Gear Fit.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the possibility of a Samsung-made wearable fitness device. Back in December a report from the Korean Herald claimed that Samsung would unveil such a device at MWC, under the name Galaxy Gear Band.
So what exactly is the Galaxy Gear Fit supposed to do? The Gear Fit will reportedly pack a flexible display and will be designed to not only work as a fitness tracker, but it will also have a pedometer and sleep monitoring function. The Gear Fit is also said to have a social component, allowing you to share your workout details and virtually compete with other Gear Fit users via social networks.
In short, the Gear Fit is designed to one-up existing health and fitness tracking devices like the Fuel Band and FitBit, as well as compete with upcoming products from LG and Sony. While the report doesn’t specify, it is fairly likely that the Galaxy Fit will at least have some of the functionality found in the standard Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
Of course, it’s important to note that Samsung has yet to confirm the existence of the Gear Fit, so take this rumor with a grain of salt. What do you think, like the idea of a fitness-oriented Galaxy Gear device? Can Samsung make a bigger dent in the wearable market this time around than they did with the first-gen Galaxy Gear?
